I woke up this morning and was still feeling fatigued from last night’s bike effort. As I lay in bed, I began to think about texting my coach and telling him that I was thinking of taking a day off.
It turns out I didn’t need to. Coach had seen my workout and my comments from last night, and already changed my plan. He gave me the option of a super easy, 60 minute bike ride or a total day off. I chose the day.
I could easily have done the 60 minute ride, but I needed a mental break from training, as much as a physical one. In hindsight, I needed the mental break more.
I know I needed that mental break, because this evening, I chose to go for a walk alone in the local park. Going into that walk, I felt tired and worn down from my training and the isolation of working from home. An hour later, having spent time alone in nature, I was totally refreshed. The time in the fresh air, alone with my thoughts, totally rejuvenated me. I can’t wait to wake up tomorrow morning, and go run.
There is a huge lesson here. When training hard, it’s critical to listen to your body (and your mind). If you need a day off to rejuvenate… take one!
