Why I Have Done Bike Workouts Four Days In A Row?

When the pool where you swim is still closed for repairs, you need to adjust. My adjustment has been to substitute my swim workouts, with workouts on the bike. As a result, I have done bike workouts for four days in a row.  In fact, I will bike instead of swimming tomorrow, so that will make five days.

Is it OK to switch one kind of a workout for another?  Generally, it is fine, as long as the training load remains roughly the same.  You don’t want to substitute an easy effort swim, with a long hard bike ride or a high intensity run.

I have chosen to substitute only cycling for my swim workouts. This is because cycling has less impact than running.   Suddenly upping my run volume would present a significant injury risk.  Rather than pounding the streets, I am pushing the pedals, mostly on my trainer.

It is interesting doing a bike workout for four days in a row.  I thought that I would get fatigued, but the opposite seems to be happening. I felt really strong on my ride this afternoon.  This tells me that I have adopted an appropriate training load.

I still don’t know when my pool will re-open.  Luckily however, we have a neighborhood pool that opens on Memorial weekend.  They have lap swimming for an hour, before it opens for general use.  I am thinking I might swim for four days in a row next week!!
