With the country increasingly shut down for the pandemic, the term ‘social distancing’ has become an everyday phrase. The problem with social distancing however, is that, it isn’t very social…
Working from home, and not leaving the house, has meant very little interaction with other people. I didn’t realize how much I would miss it. I always thought I would be happy to just spend time alone with the family and I am, but I miss interaction with others too.
Thus, when one of my C26 Triathlon teammates, set up a group ride via Zwift and Discord for this evening, I decided I would join (even though I don’t have Zwift). What a great decision that was.
Just after 6.00pm, I jumped on my bike trainer for my 90 minute ride and signed into the group conversation on Discord. Immediately, I was talking with friends old and new. It was like we were all riding together and just chatting.
This was the first time I have ridden in my basement without the TV on… I didn’t need it. The 90 minute ride just flew by, as the group of us talked to each other about how the pandemic was affecting us, and other more fun stuff. We had people participating from up north in Canada, all the way down to Florida. We even decided to share selfies … that blurry photo above, is the selfie I shared.
I feel so uplifted by the whole event, and can’t wait to do it all again on Saturday morning. Luckily, I also have an easy 90 minute ride that morning. I don’t think I would be as much fun for everyone, if I was grunting my way through hard intervals, while they were trying to talk…
Quick footnote : My website is pretty basic right now. I chose to start sharing first, rather than spending time making the website complete before launching the blog. I’m looking forward to building the website over time into a useful resource for you .. just another part of my ‘life’ that you will get to read about.
