Today has been a very emotional day. My son and I are avid Formula 1 racing fans, and so we were excited to watch the race in Bahrain today. Little did we know what an eventful race it was going to be.
By now, many of you will have seen the incredibly bad crash that Romain Grosjean had on the opening lap of the race. My son and I watched it live. We saw the car swerve off the track. We saw the huge ball of flames. We saw the race get stopped immediately. Then we waited, and waited, for news of Romain. The crash was horrific. I was sick to my stomach and literally shaking with fear. Then came the amazing news and footage, that showed Romain leaving the wreckage and that he was ‘OK’.
Watching an event like this unfold before your eyes, is unsettling, and in my case, made me super thankful for the life I have. I wanted to feel like I was celebrating life on my ‘choice workout’ today, and so I chose to go run in the woods this afternoon. I needed time in nature to think.
I chose a new route in Moraine State Park, which is where I go to open water swim in the summer. I ran along part of the relatively new, long distance footpath, the North Country Trail. It was quiet and peaceful in the woods. There was a slight chill in the air, but it wasn’t cold. It was so quiet that I could hear myself breathing and could hear my footsteps on the ground. It was just what I needed.
I ended up running for an hour and forty minutes. When I finished, I was quite tired physically but mentally I was totally rejuvenated.
Sometimes, time alone is the best therapy. I made a good choice for my workout… I needed a trail run today.
