I didn’t think I would ever say this, but swimming is my favorite discipline right now.
The swim leg has always been my weakest part of triathlon and in some races, it has been my downfall. I came late to swimming, only starting when I decided that I wanted to do a triathlon, about four years ago. I have improved a lot in those four years, but I still don’t feel like a natural and comfortable swimmer. Swimming remains a challenge, but one I am determined to keep working at.
Today is my birthday and I had two workouts. This morning I did a 50 minute, Zone 2 run. It was another one of those tough runs, where my legs felt dead. I have had the same ‘dead’ feeling in my legs, while on the bike recently too. So, when I got to the pool this evening, I was actually looking forward to my swim.
Even though I have only been back in the pool for a few weeks, I already feel like I am making progress. I am confident that I am on track to get back to where I was, in terms of fitness and speed, when the pools shut down earlier this year.
I really enjoyed tonights swim. The Zone 4 intervals really got my heart rate up and had me breathing hard. The Zone 3 intervals were challenging too and because I don’t have a lot of swim endurance right now, even the last few Zone 2, 100’s were not easy. Keeping my form and technique in good shape for those last few intervals was my focus; that was tough with tired shoulders.
I left the pool a very happy person. I really hope that the rise in the number Covid cases, doesn’t cause the government to shut down the pools again. That would be so frustrating, especially now that I am finding swimming to be so much fun.
