Living in Pittsburgh means my bike workouts are done on the trainer in winter, so it was down to the basement again this morning.
When it comes to riding on the bike trainer, I am a TrainerRoad guy. I keep thinking I will try Zwift, but I have never got around to actually doing it. I like the simplicity of following a TrainerRoad workout while watching TV, Netflix or listening to music and podcasts.
I am fortunate enough to have a ‘smart trainer’ (I have a Wahoo Kickr), but never use it in ERG mode. ERG mode is where the trainer sets the power for you and you just peddle to maintain that power. I use Standard mode, so that if I am feeling a little tired, I can peddle below the target power or on days like today, I can chose to go higher. I had a great session today.
My coach, Robbie Bruce of C26 Triathlon (www.crushingiron.com), likes to give me ‘big gear’ sessions. These are intervals done at low cadence, in a big gear. They are tough workouts but they really develop bike strength. The chart in today’s photo shows I was able to go significantly above target power which means I’m getting stronger (at least today I was).
If you have any questions about using TrainerRoad or riding a bike trainer in general, shoot me a message and I’ll do my best to help you out.
Quick footnote : My website is pretty basic right now. I chose to start sharing first, rather than spending time making the website complete before launching the blog. I’m looking forward to building the website over time into a useful resource for you .. just another part of my ‘life’ that you will get to read about.
