As I was finishing up working from home this afternoon, it started to get dark outside and I could hear the distant rumbling of thunder. I knew I had a combined run then bike workout scheduled, and was thinking that I might need to run on the treadmill, rather than outside. Then it happened … power outage.
With no power, running on the treadmill was no longer an option and because I have a smart bike trainer, doing an indoor bike session was also not possible. We phoned the power company and their automated system gave an estimate of at least two hours, before the power would be back on. What to do?
A quick look at the weather forecast showed that the thunderstorms would be gone quickly, but that it was likely to rain for the rest of the evening. Biking outside would be quite dangerous, so my only option for a workout looked like a run. I decided to have an early dinner and hope the power came back on early; it didn’t.
My decision was made, I would do the harder run session, that I had on my schedule for tomorrow, and push back my combined run/bike workout. Both days were similar in effort and intensity, so switching them around like this is no issue.
What turned out to be an issue, was running very late in the day and after dinner. To let my meal settle, I didn’t start my run until after 8pm. This is very late for me to work out. The run actually went quite well in terms of pace and perceived effort, but I just didn’t feel right. I could feel the food in my stomach and was generally not happy during the run.
Nonetheless, I got a workout done and remain on track for another big week of work. The weather tomorrow looks much better, so that combined run/bike session should be possible.
It always pays to be a little flexible with your plans, and adapt to what life throws your way…
