The Ups And Downs Of Training For Triathlon

I missed writing my regular update last week, so this is a two week update.  It has been a time where I experienced the ups and downs of training for triathlons (or in my case a SwimRun race).

In my last post, I was excited about finally getting back into the pool.  I need to get into swim shape for my race in early April. Unfortunately, I have not been back to the pool since. I have been experiencing some slight shoulder pain and decided that it would be best not to swim.  I saw a PT last week and luckily it is not a serious issue, but I will only be able to return to swimming, when I am pain free.

The same week that I experienced my shoulder issue, I also had a terrible run at our regular Sunday group run.  We ran on a beautiful and snowy high-line canal trail, but I just struggled to breath. I struggled so much, I cut my run short.  It was a week where I definitely experienced the ‘downs’ of training.

That week of training was a recovery week and it looked like this.

Monday :  Day Off – Still fatigued from previous week
Tuesday :  Sweet Spot Intervals on bike trainer
Wednesday :  Short aerobic run on treadmill
Thursday :  Anaerobic intervals ride on bike trainer
Friday :  Easy aerobic long run outside
Saturday :  Aerobic bike ride on trainer
Sunday :  Short aerobic run – the one I cut short

Total training for the week :  Run = 2:42, Bike = 4:20,  No Swim

In addition to stepping back the training volume for a recovery week, I also stopped strength training to help my shoulder heal.

I felt much better on my run this past Sunday… the warmer weather helped

,I was due to pick back up the training volume this past week, but after my terrible run on the previous Sunday, I was a little nervous about it.  As it turned out, my training went very well.  Indeed, on Thursday, I had what was easily my best run of the year.  I cruised along at an aerobic effort but also, at what turned out to be quite a nice pace. I really felt like I ran like I was running last year. Now I was back to feeling the ‘ups’ of triathlon training.

Last week my training looked like this.

Monday : Sweet Spot Intervals on bike trainer
Tuesday :  Aerobic Run
Wednesday : VO2 intervals ride on bike trainer
Thursday :  Aerobic Run
Friday :  Aerobic Run On Treadmill (8″ of snow outside)
Saturday :  Aerobic bike ride on trainer
Sunday :  Aerobic Long Run (almost no snow outside – CO weather at it’s best!!)

Total training for the week :  Run = 3:32, Bike = 4:26,  No Swim

So that was my past two weeks of training, including the ups and downs.  I am six weeks away from race week. I feel good about where my run is at; obviously swimming is a little behind.
