I am now less than a month away from the Ironman 70.3 World Championship race in Taupo, New Zealand. I am deep within my final big block of training, and my body is starting to ‘feel it’. My legs in particular, feel fatigued after hard workouts.
Maximizing recovery at times like these is critical. I have tried to focus on taking my easy workouts, very easy. I am eating well and making sure I take in a protein plus carbohydrate drink after workouts. I am also trying to get a little more sleep.
I did have one easy workout where, I maybe went a little too hard. That was my long run last Sunday morning. I ran part of my run with some friends, and as often happens in groups runs, the pace got a little faster as the run progressed. I was definitely pushing harder than prescribed at the end of the run.
It was great to have some company on my long run last week
So how is my training ‘report card’ going with less than a month to go to the race in Taupo? It’s very similar to where it was a few weeks ago.
Swimming – Going well and I feel on track
Cycling – I’m still feeling strong on the bike.
Running – Still behind where I would like to be. Run endurance has improved, but I’m still lacking some speed during tempo and interval runs.
Overall though things are going well. I just have to get through the next ten days of hard work. Then it is time to begin taper and to face the long journey to New Zealand.
