For the first time in over a month, I have finally been able to find time to write a blog post. In the past month, we have sold our house in Pittsburgh and moved into our new home in Colorado. I often write about balancing life and triathlon and recently, that balance needed to be almost all ‘life’.
When we made the decision to move to Colorado early this year, I knew that my ability to train would take a big hit. For this reason, I chose to avoid registering for any races, so that I wouldn’t add any additional stress to my life. I had to focus on making the move to Colorado. Now that we are here, I finally have time to get back to the sport I love.
Between March 22nd and April 23rd (a whole month), I was only able to complete five workouts. This was mostly due to being preoccupied with our move. In addition however, I also got a case of posterior tibial tendonitis in my left foot. This was very painful and stopped me running, just when I was finding time to run again.
Moving Out Of Our Pittsburgh Home
During that month away from training, I was able to sneak in my first bike ride in Colorado. The ride confirmed why I wanted to move here. I rode for almost forty miles on fantastic bike paths. These bike paths are everywhere and most are made of concrete that is in great shape. I rode on the C-470 path from Chatfield State Park to Mount Carbon. It was windy that day, but the ride was a lot of fun.
39 Miles Of Pure Joy
Fortunately, at the beginning of last week, we had settled into our new home enough, for me to consider training again. Also fortunately, my foot had recovered so that I could run again. After more than a month away from regular workouts, I was keen to get back at it. They key however was to ease into working out again slowly. I have undoubtedly lost fitness over the past month and in addition, I am now at a much higher altitude. I need to give my body time to adapt. Here is what I did last week:
- Monday – 40 Minute Aerobic Run
- Tuesday – 50 Minute Trainer Ride with 5 x 3 Minutes at Threshold
- Wednesday – 40 Minute Aerobic Run
- Thursday – 50 Minute Aerobic Trainer Ride
- Friday – 50 Minute Aerobic Run
- Saturday – 2.5 Hour Aerobic Ride with 30 Minutes of Harder Effort (Team Zoot Group Ride)
- Sunday – 1 Hour Aerobic Run (Team Zoot Group Run)
I was super happy with my week.

So with a solid week of training under my belt, I feel like I am on the long road back to full fitness. The month off to complete our move was necessary and I didn’t have the stress of training for a race. Speaking of races… I am now ‘free’ to consider them again. All I have to do, is find to races that will fit my schedule…
